What is the best way to protect myself from false accusations when the police didn't show up to an accident?

There's a reason New Orleans PD is is called NO PD. Fortunately, I know that in this state a police report is not a legal requirement after an accident, although since it was clearly not my fault it sure would have helped. What is the best way to protect myself from false accusations when the police didn't show up to an accident?
Photographs and witnesses are about the only thing to help. I had someone merge into my car when their lane ended and unfortunately the insurance company had no way to believe either driver. We each ended up having to pay for our own repairs. We even had the police show up, but apparently in MD they don't have to write a report for a minor accident. All they did was ensure that information was exchanged.

Pick up a disposable camera and store it in the vehicle. If you can get a witness, get their information. If you weren't able to get a witness at the scene, consider taking out an add in the paper asking for someone that may have driven by to get in touch with you. What is the best way to protect myself from false accusations when the police didn't show up to an accident?
You should go to the police department and request to fill out a police report. Take photos of your car and of the other car if the other driver will let you. Complete the narrative as best you can, describing everything that happened. Note in the narrative that you have photographs available, describe any statements the other driver or passengers said, and list any witnesses to the accident. The more info you can document and memorialize, the less that can be made up later by someone else.
that's why you should keep a toss away camera in your glove box....pictures say it all
