What can we do to help prevent rape and false accusations of it?

Rape:

Rape is a major problem for most women (and some men). It is common for the victim to experience intense, and unpredictable, emotions, and they may find it hard to deal with their memories of the event. Victims can be severely traumatized by the assault and may have difficulty functioning as well as they had been used to prior to the assault.

False Accusations of Rape:

False accusations of rape is a major problem for most men (and some women). False accusations can destroy the accused's reputation even if proven innocent. Sentence for a rapist is 15 years of prison time in which, the victim could be gang raped, killed, and physically assaulted. The victim's normal life is destroyed to be replaced by jail time. This can lead to severe depression and other emotional trauma.

What can we do to help prevent those things from happening? What can we do to help prevent rape and false accusations of it?
For false aqusations, we need to ensure that the acqused is assumed innocent until he/she is proven guilty.

A good and fair trial is required.

False acquisers need to be jailed to educate people on how bad the crime is.

This would help to discourage future false acquisations.

To prevent rape, we need to properly encourage victims to report the crime.

By ensuring that the majority of rapists receive jail time, it would show the severity of the situation to those considering it and hopefully discourage it.

People need to be properly educated on the consequences of rape and fales acquisations of rape.

We need to conceal the identities of the accused and the accuser until the situation has been resolved to promote the reporting of rapes and to protect the falsely accused from excessive consequences.

Edit @CRK:

I believe false rape acquisations are much higher than you have stated. The following are my sources:

1) Linda Fairstein, former head of the New York County District Attorney’s Sex Crimes Unit, noted, “There are about 4,000 reports of rape each year in Manhattan. Of these, about half simply did not happen. ... It’s my job to bring justice to the man who has been falsely accused by a woman who has a grudge against him, just as it’s my job to prosecute the real thing.”(Sexual Violence: Our War Against Rape. William Morrow %26amp; Company, 1993.)

2)';With the cooperation of the police agency of a small metropolitan community, 45 consecutive, disposed, false rape allegations covering a 9 year period were studied. False rape allegations constitute 41% of the total forcible rape cases (109) reported during this period. These false allegations appear to serve three major functions for the complainants: providing an alibi, seeking revenge, and obtaining sympathy and attention.';

';False rape allegations are reported in similar numbers at college campuses; approximately 50% of rape charges are admitted to be false by the accuser.';What can we do to help prevent rape and false accusations of it?
change the way women feel about their sexuality and their guilty conscience.

as far as the legal sstem use better investigative techniques and stop using polygraph tests
A rapist deserves to be gang raped in constant turn for 15 years it is the worst crime of all. I wish death penalty came back for rapists.
Keep from happening??? Don't put yourself in the postion of being accused. That and have a better people sense if your going to be intimate.
Rape is a bad thing. it must be controlled from both sides, I mean from woman as well as from man.
This is probably very hard to do, but they need to make it easier for women to testify. Several of my friends have been raped, but none of them even reported it for a number of reasons.

1. They didn't really know what to do

2. They didn't have money for legal fees

3. They didn't want to face the rapist

4. They were afraid of appeals

5. They didn't want it to be public, or have the media involved

6. They were afraid that no one would believe them

7. They were afraid their family would find out

etc etc. These were mid-teen girls and that makes it really hard to know what to do and know what to expect.

I know that there are so many men out there who get away with it because it's made too difficult for the women who appear in court.
I don't know if you can, any more than you can prevent murder or false accusations of murder.

There are ways of minimizing rape, like encouraging self defense for women or making it easier for a woman to face her accuser, but if you really want to stop rape, you're going to have to get into the guy's mind and see why he wants to do what he does, and fix that.

False accusations of rape should be fought by the police and the DA being extra vigilant on the case, making sure all the evidence fits. Don't openly question the alleged victim, but really make sure her story and evidence add up. Do that, a lot of the unfounded rape allegations should be filtered out.
What we do with every other crime. Discourage it by putting penalities on it.
Teach people there is no excuse for rape. It's never ok and never the victim's fault. This is true whether it's a woman going about her life or a man in prison. A woman could be a drunk naked prostitute running down a dark alley naked yelling ';rape me'; and it is still NOT ok to rape. A man could be a rapist serving well deserved time in prison and it's still not ok to rape.

While there's lots of tips going around about how to avoid being raped, there's no guarantee that what you do can prevent rapes. For example, some common myths are you can avoid rape by dressing modestly or staying in well lit places. But what about when you're riding home with someone you're supposed to be able to trust or someone breaks into your house? A rapist is a sadistic domineering predator that lacks boundaries and finds it easy to objectify others and use them.

More than half of women are raped or in some way sexually abused and most do not report the rape. Most reported rapes, about 94% are truthful. Most rapes are unfounded for lack of evidence. Therefore, the antifeminist rumor going around on women's studies that large numbers of men are falsely accused of rape is simply a lie perpetuated either by someone who was falsely accused, who committed a rape and is trying to get out of it, or who was raped in prison. Most falsely accused men are not prosecuted and most of the others are acquitted like the Duke boys. Men who are not criminals rarely go to prison for rape and many of those are now being found out due to technological advances such as dna testing.

Educating young people to consider rape a serious crime and not a joke, revenge, punishment, and not ok under any circumstances is the best way to prevent either of the problems you mentioned.
To prevent rape: Encourage more women to learn self-defense; include rape and sexual assault in the sex-ed curriculum; send all rapists to jail and give them mandatory rehab.

To prevent false rape accusations: Prevent rape. But until that happens, make it clear to everyone through the media that false rape accusations ruin the lives of both the accused and the accuser, as well as other accusers after them.
Drinking is involved in over half of reported rapes...why don't you get people to stop getting drunk off their asses first!!!
I think the pendulum will undoubtedly swing back in time.

Just as the DFS has been about the business of destroying lives and families because anyone could call them and they would yank the kids from the parents - and I have known a few who have used that as a weapon or a threat to get their way with an ex-spouse. My co-worker lives in constant fear as her ex threatens it all the time. I think that some of that has lessened over time when it was found out that DFS was coercing children into admitting false sexual abuse.

Same is true with rape. After enough false cases are proved, I think society will begin to raise an eyebrow and question the authenticity of the claim before acting in rash judgment. Too bad for some, I suppose, as true rape victims may have to be more scrutinized - and that during a time of great trauma.

You are not going to prevent it. Society has become so morally bankrupt - violence, homosexuality and illicit sex are piped into our living rooms all day long on TV and Internet and when parents allow their children to be subjected to this without any discretion, their minds and hearts are being 'programmed' to be insensitive to it....or worse to be intrigued by it.

I believe our court will wise up to the false accusations, but I don't believe the occasion of rape will decline any time soon.
Romance properly.
