Why do people feel that ';rape'; is a more serious crime than ';false accusation';?

Don't get me wrong, rape is a serious crime; but falsely accused another person of rape is just as serious if not MORE. Because by falsely accused another person of rape, you have basically destroy that person life and reputation. Everywhere he goes the ';rapist'; label goes with him.

In the US, the number of women falsely accused men of rape is rising.

Making false allegations of rape is a serious crime, if not MORE serious than rape.

So why do people feel that ';rape'; is a more serious crime than ';false accusation';?Why do people feel that ';rape'; is a more serious crime than ';false accusation';?
They should be dealt with as seriously as each other. It is semantics to allow feminists to lessen one over the other. The truth is, both destroy the victims lives in a mental way.

If real rape is to be taken seriously, the crying rape (false accusations) needs to be taken seriously. Why do people feel that ';rape'; is a more serious crime than ';false accusation';?
I had a male friend who was falsly accused of rape, but since there wasn't any way to prove he did it then he was let go without anything on his record and it ruined her reputation (no one will touch her now). The truth is, in most cases, if there is no proof there is no charge and thus no label to follow him around.

If he is found guilty, there is normally proof that he did it, so, while false accusation is serious, it's not likly to ruin his reputation, but it can ruin hers.

it's funny that most the people debating about this topic have never been through it themselves or they would know that, without proof there's normally no charge.
20+ years in prison. freputation destroyed forever. lifetime felony record.

piece of cake.
Both are very serious crimes.

But... I think a devastating physical attack is more serious than a verbal.

A woman who is raped has her life destroyed just as throughly as a man who is falsly accused...and usually suffers physical injury as well.
I'd agree with the other respondents who would say that the emotional damage rape victims feel may be BROADER than the emotional damage people falsely accused of rape experience. Both crimes are serious, as you admit, but I'd advocate that the BREADTH of effects also be taken into account when weighing the severity of the crimes.
The impact of a false allegation is serious, but it is nowhere near as traumatic or as deeply impacting as having to heal (emotionally, psychologically, physically, socially, and spiritually) from a violent crime such as rape. You don't think that women who are raped are damaged in any way? You don't think they spend their whole lives trying to heal from this? You don't think it affects their personal relationships, doesn't cause any serious effects whatsoever? Apparently you have never been raped. Only someone who hasn't would ever speculate that a false allegation is worse than the real thing. I sincerely hope that you never have to find out firsthand just how wrong about this you really are.

Edit: Rape victims might suffer some ';emotional damage';...yes...but what about the physical damage? Ever had a bottle shoved up your anus and tree branches inserted into your vagina like Virginia Morse did? You tell me how is a false accusation more traumatic than that? This woman did not live through her ordeal. She was shot, and that was probably ';merciful.'; Had she lived, she would have been physically and psychologically damaged for life.
Probably for the same reason a physical assault is more serious than slander.
I have just read the Anita Cobby murder out of curiosity to one of Blue B's questions.

Please read it, I think it might change your opinion on how serious rape actually is.

Most rapes aren't even reported. Of those that are, only a minority are successfully prosecuted. So that means that actual cases of deliberate, false accusation (a criminal offense involving lying to police and covered by perjury law(s)) are rare. Rape victims often suffer the effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder for the rest of their lives.

So no.
You're pointing a gun at us and talking about false accusations. I think you are so narrow-minded.
i have been raped....and i have never falsely accused anyone of rape..

the thing is though..and im only saying this from my own experiance.

if i had ever falsely accused anyone of rape that person would more than likely be considered bad where i live...yes he would most likely have went to jail....but he would have gotten out.

later on he could move to a different state...or even move out of the country,,,where no one knew about him...and start his life over..

no matter where ppl like me go...our rape..our memories..are always with us..no matter what.

yes it happened to me a long time ago...but i have my triggers...and questions such as this make me remember.

so i can never really get away from it.

the falsely accused can..over time.

but neither one is good.
I recently asnwered this question from someone else but it was phrased in the 'opposite' way, 'why do some people feel that the accusation of rape is more serious than rape'. I got quite a lot of thumbs down and people disagreed with my answer. It's strange but the answers to this question seem to refelect a belief that they are both really bad crimes, but in the other question, only rape was considered to be bad and the accusation of rape was treated as petty name calling. The other question was clearly in response to this one.
I wouldn't say that false accusation is MORE serious, though it is just as serious as rape. A rape victim also has her/his life and reputation ruined (there will always be people that will second guess the victim). Rape is something that stays with the victim forever-- it doesn't go away when the bruises leave. The effects of rape are horrific, and often stay with the victim forever. Often his/her life is dramatically altered and simple tasks can't be performed as they used to be. Their view on the world changes, sometimes in a drastic and dangerous way. I wouldn't discount a rape victim just because the act only happened once.

False accusation is also a serious crime and should be treated as such. However, I would say that there are FAR more rapes than false accusations. We should be careful to never degrade either of these crimes, though. It is difficult to know when its rape or not since most cases of rape break down into a he said-she said scenario.
I read about the incident that is probably causing you to ask this. Someone spread a rumor that a guy raped someone, which caused the guy to get fired from his job. Despite no evidence and such, not even a rapee, it continued to haunt him, and he eventually killed himself.

I do agree with you that they are both horrible things. False accusations are serious. Rather or not false accusations of rape is worse than the real thing is a personal choice though, and you'll never get anywhere by downplaying other peoples misfortunes.

So I would suggest bringing awareness to the seriousness of false accusations, but do so without claiming it more serious than a woman actually getting raped. Gotta have tact, because people will run all over you even though your intentions were good and innocent.
I agree it would be devastating to a man to be falsley accused. It would be a nightmare if someone accused my husband of such as thing. Yes it destroys a reputation, relationships, jobs and could possibly bankrupt a person.

However, as bad as that is, I don't think it compares to the horror of rape. Firstly, many rapes end in murder or such a severe beating that the person never fully recovers. It can also result in AIDS. Unlike a reputation, a broken body can't be fixed.

The mental damage is also far worse. Women have nightmares, post traumatic stress, inablilty to have a romantic relationship. They often turn to substance abuse or suicide, particularly young victimes.

If a man's reputation is so badly damaged by a rape accusation, he can move, make new friends and put it all behind him. If he serves time, that will eventually end too. Rape victims often don't have an end or escape from their suffering.

If you could choose to be raped by a man or accused of rape, what would you choose Guns Fan?
Because rape IS a more serious crime than false accusations.

Taking someone by force sexually is a lot worse then accusing someone of something, even if it is rape.
How would you feel being raped by a man or more than one man?

Rape is a very serious and violent crime.

False accusation is not a violent crime and is less common than rape.

Chauvinism = Ignorance
While falsely accusing a person of rape is indeed destructive and criminal, I dare say, I would imagine, it would not compare to rape.
Perhaps we should turn this question around, maybe you can see it from another perspective.

Would you rather be raped or have a false accusation that you raped someone else?
both are terrible and it depends on the person on which they think is more serious
In my opinion, this politically correct society has made it much easier for any untruthful person to make accusations about anything. Women are usually the ones who get raped and therefore a female con artist can make up rape lies against someone she may already know or for some other sinister reason.
I can only say that false accusations or not, I hope you never ever have to see a sister, or mother, or daughter or ANY loved one in the hospital clinging and fighting for life after being raped as I saw one of mine. The physical scares and permanent disability ALONE can never express the emotional scares that ONE F**KING DRUGGY IDIOT did, not only to this beautiful petite girl, but to the entire family, and friends around her is disgusting. No human ever deserves what she got. For those accusing falsely, they need to see someone in that situation before they wish it for themselves.
There are so many reasons why being raped is worse. The only way I can think I might be able to bring it home to you is to say YOU imagine being raped by a man, or more than one man. You are humiliated, in pain, terrified, and afterwards maybe you are threatened with death for your silence. Then you have to go through the decision of whether to report or not, not knowing if you will be believed because the tears in your rectum and any DNA evidence are not actually proof that you were raped. And then you will probably suffer some form of PTSD, your sex life might suffer, you might not be able to leave the house, feel like you should have been able to stop it.

I could go on, but I really don't think I need to.

Personally I would MUCH rather be accused of a serious assault that I had not done than go through that.

Edit: I remember you saying that you do not care about violence against women, so I am guessing that it would not bother you if a woman suffers physically and emotionally as a result of rape, that HER reputation might be ruined (because there are people like you who won't believe her if she is 'not nice' and the man is), that she may end up pregnant or with an disease, or both, etcetc - because a MAN'S reputation is worth SO much more isn't it?

You are always obnoxious Guns, but you have really surpassed yourself with this one.
It also destroys the womens's reputation and life.

After the woman has been raped, she must go for couselling, and doctors appointments to rid herself of the filthy STDS that she got although she didn't deserve them. These can cause infertility, or cancer. The effect is that she can't have kids or live a long life. No one would want to marry her either if he was wanting a virgin. In a small town this would get around the grapevine, destroying her future.
I think that ';false accusation'; is just as bad, and maybe even worse. But one of my best friends was ';falsely accused'; so...
There is no blood, violent tearing of flesh, drugging, deadly communicable diseases or unwanted pregnancy with false accusations.

And false accusations are a lot less common than rape.

The fact that you even have to ask this question makes my skin crawl.
your going too get alot of diffrent oppinions on that
I somewhat agree with you;since such an acussation that proves to be false has basically destroyed the credibility of an honest and inocent man.
One is not more serious than the other. Each are severely physiologically damaging. They are both terrible.

Rape is humiliating. It's just awful. How would I know? It happened to me.

I had to go to a line-up to pick out the person, and that person wasn't there so I chose no one. The cop really wanted me to pick #3, and I insisted that unless he used Mane and Tail to miraculously grow his hair like 4 inches that wasn't him.

Where are you getting your numbers about false accusations?

The entire process is humiliating, and those who falsely accuse should be punished for doing so. I didn't want to ruin some guys life because the cop wanted me to choose someone, and I think most of us honest survivors would never do such a thing.
They are both equally serious
In the U.S most crimes committed against men , by women are considered to not be serious, rape , false accusations ,battery , fraud and even murder carry much less of a consequence when committed by women against men.

I honestly can't tell you why ,but it is one of the many imbalances of ( so called equality) that concern me.
